Tis the Season

This is the time of year when it becomes most apparent just how far away from home I really am. It's not just because the holiday season is a family time, but really because there is nothing like the bizarre experience of holiday shopping in the scorching summer heat, amongst palm trees and barbecues. As a New Englander, I don't think I'll ever quite get over that.

Last Christmas I was already living in Australia, but I travelled home for the month of December (that was a shocking transition to cold!). This year will be my first Christmas away from my family, and my first in Australia. I'm planning to make the most of it by discovering and embracing quirky Aussie traditions (drinking on the beach in santa hats, perhaps?) while also decorating my own synthetic tree. :)

Pleats, please!

I've been on the hunt for a sweet and flowy pleated skirt for months now, and the other day I finally bought one! It is the perfect bright coral color. The outfit possibilities are truly endless! Here are a few ways that I can't wait to style my skirt, all from my collection of inspirational pins on Pinterest.

Friendsgiving

Last Saturday we introduced our Aussie friends to our version of Thanksgiving with a "friendsgiving" celebration.

The pie lineup: Mango Merengue, two Pumpkins, and Caramel Tart

It was the perfect combination of tradition and laid back aussie charm. We sipped wine and beer (Budweiser, as our guests wanted to be authentic American) while the turkey cooked, then cheerfully gave thanks before enjoying our meal.

Simple but delicious: turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, peas, corn & rolls

We ended up eating quite late, but no one minded and the food was worth the wait. Boyfriend (the cook in this household) made his first turkey. It turned out beautifully!

Signs of an aussie gathering!

Near midnight we all decided to take a stroll down to the beach. We lay in the sand, looking at the stars and listening to the waves crash in the dark. This was my second Thanksgiving away from my family, but on this night I was filled with so much warmth and gratitude for this beautiful place, my friends, and my supportive boyfriend who does everything he can to make me feel at home. Now it's time to welcome the holiday season!

I miss this so much

Every. Year.

I know it's pretty much winter now in New England, but it's been far too long since I've seen these colors in person.

I live here

Just a 10 minute walk to this

And sometimes I forget all too easily! Here's to slowing down, getting outside, and taking in more of the beautiful things (big and small) that surround me.
